Tips for Staying Healthy During the COVID-19 Outbreak

The COVID-19 virus is completely changing our daily routines and habits. School is being held online, professionals are now working from home and some cities are even on lockdown to stop the spread of the virus.

It is extremely important to practice social distancing at this time and implement healthy habits to keep your immune system up and working effectively.

Follow these simple steps to stay healthy

Being home all day can be hard, especially for extroverts. Here are a few helpful tips to keep you moving and feeling good during COVID-19:

Workout/Exercise

Most gyms and studios are currently closed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t continue to work out. Being cooped up indoors all day can really bring you down, which is why it is important to stay active. Try setting up your yoga mat and following a YouTube video or going for a jog around your neighborhood. According to Exercise & Sports Science Australia, “Research does show that exercise can support our immune system and secondly, exercise is proven to support our mental health,” explains Anita Hobson-Powell, chief executive officer of ESSA.

Connect with others

Although it is vital that we practice social distancing, it is still important to connect with friends and family during this time. Check on your loved ones using Facetime as a way to stay in contact. There is even an extension you can download on Chrome to watch Netflix movies with friends.

Managing your stress

According to the CDC, “Stress during an infectious disease outbreak can cause changes in sleep or eating patterns, difficulty sleeping or concentration, worsening of chronic health problems and an increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs.” Stress can also affect the immune system by raising blood pressure. Taking care of yourself, your friends and family can help you cope with stress and make your community stronger.

Get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep is especially important for the immune system because sleep deprivation can increase inflammatory factors. Try getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night.

Eat healthy

When you are working from home, it can be easy to walk to the pantry and grab your favorite snacks and goodies. Think twice about what you are putting into your body. Rather than munching on cookies and crackers, grab a healthier alternative such as vegetables or fruits that are essential in staying healthy.

Wash your hands

We all know the importance of handwashing. Wash your hands with warm soapy water for at least 20 seconds as often as you can during this outbreak, and avoid touching your face.

Please remember to practice safe social distancing during this time and remember to wash your hands regularly. If you’re interested in booking a virtual visit with the Ear & Sinus Institute team, please call (817) 993- 4074.
